Architecture & Interior Design
Joseph Dirand is the son of celebrated interiors photographer Jacques Dirand. He graduated from the École Nationale Supérieure d'Architecture de Paris-Belleville and, as Architectural Digest reported, 'emerged as a strict modernist enraptured by the blank slate of minimalism.' At just 25, he was commissioned to design the interiors of Junko Shimada's Paris shop.
His influences range from Curzio Malaparte's cliff-top villa on Capri to John Pawson's reductive architecture. Over time, Dirand moved beyond pure minimalism toward what critics have called 'ornamental minimalism' — a vocabulary that fuses classical rigour with contemporary warmth.
Named to the AD100 in 2023, Dirand's practice spans boutiques for luxury fashion houses, private residences, and hospitality. His understated Paris apartment, photographed by his brother Adrien, has become an icon of contemporary French design.
'Interesting things never happen where you expect them to,' he has observed — a philosophy that drives his constant refinement.
