Based Upon creates physical manifestations of the unsaid. Conceived in London in 2004, the studio transcends traditional boundaries, producing work as a band — an approach to authorship not yet widely recognised within physical art. Led by founding members, twin brothers Ian and Richard Abell and Alex Welch, Based Upon works across sculpture, furniture, and large-scale architectural commissions.

Over more than sixteen years, Based Upon has gained a reputation for commissioned works that move into the realm of the priceless. Their work draws deeply from nature — flowing forms, organic textures, and the imprint of the natural world rendered in bronze, precious metals, and rare materials. Their process bridges art and craft, with each piece emerging from an intensive, collaborative studio practice.

The studio's bespoke artworks and sculptural furniture have been commissioned for private residences, luxury developments, and cultural institutions worldwide.
