Born in Goiânia, Brazil in 1962, Valéria Nascimento grew up surrounded by the exuberant Brazilian landscape that has deeply influenced her work and artistic sensibility. Initially trained as an architect, she moved to Rio after graduating in 1985, where she was introduced to clay. Fascinated by its malleability and the myriad expressions the medium offers, she shifted her career path to pursue ceramics full-time.

Nascimento is fascinated by the recurring patterns and rhythms of nature — spirals, waves, petals, leaves, and the undulating forms of the natural world. Her beautifully delicate, whisper-thin, and mostly neutrally coloured porcelain works can be composed of hundreds of hand-formed ceramic shapes, creating immersive sculptural installations.

Her largest installation, Rainforest, comprised 10,000 individual elements. She has created work for brands including Chanel, Tiffany's, and Escada. Now based in London, she is represented by the Woolff Gallery and Ateliers Courbet in New York.
