Japanese Zabuton · Handcrafted Textiles · Kyoto Heritage

About

Takaokaya is a family-owned Japanese atelier established in 1919 in Kyoto, the ancient imperial capital, dedicated to the handcrafted art of zabuton cushions and futon bedding. The company was founded by an enterprising young craftsman during a period of rapid Western modernisation, with the conviction that Japan's traditional textile arts and culture of 'kutsurogi' — the art of deep, unhurried relaxation — deserved preservation and contemporary reinterpretation.

Now in its fourth generation under CEO Koichiro Takaoka, the workshop continues to produce each piece entirely by hand, using time-honoured techniques that have been refined over more than a century. Natural fibres, traditional dyes and meticulous hand-stitching define a product range that bridges the ceremonial aesthetics of the tea room with the needs of modern living spaces worldwide.

In 2019 Takaokaya celebrated its centenary, a milestone that affirmed the company's quiet mission: to bring the contemplative comfort of Japanese craft into homes everywhere, one cushion at a time.
