"The light, the colours, the wind, the quality of the air — I was blessed to live in this part of the world; it influenced me very much."
— Pierre Yovanovitch, Sotheby's interview
Pierre Yovanovitch grew up in Nice, France, to an industrialist Yugoslavian father and a French mother. He would later credit the fact that he grew up with very few family heirlooms as inspiration for creating his own legacy. After attending business school in Paris, he met Pierre Cardin, who offered him an apprenticeship. He worked for Cardin for eight years — first as a menswear license manager, then as a designer for his menswear collections — developing a passion for shape, form, and what he calls Cardin's quality as an "architect of clothing."
