"I grew up in a multicultural, working"
— class part of North London. That is why our public projects matter so much to me. That is where the joy comes in. I create work that is emotional, poetic, functional, and accessible. I am addicted to it.\n— Paul Cocksedge, The Fluxx interview
Paul Cocksedge is a London-based designer who has built a reputation over the past twenty years for creating projects that push the limits of technology and materials. Known for his poetic approach to materials and space, he blurs the boundaries between design, art, and engineering — from large-scale public installations to sculptural furniture.
Cocksedge grew up in a working-class, multicultural part of North London, in Turnpike Lane, bordering Tottenham. He studied at the Royal College of Art under Ron Arad. "When I entered the art and design world, I came in as a bit of an outsider," he reflects. "We weren't visiting the Tate or the Design Museum. So I approached it from a different angle."
His work has been commissioned by institutions including MoMA and Swire Properties, and he has collaborated with brands such as Swarovski and Hermès. His public installations — at the London Design Festival, Trafalgar Square, and beyond — are driven by curiosity and a desire to see the public interact with and complete each piece.
His monograph, Reflections, was published by Phaidon and exhibited at Carpenters Workshop Gallery in London. The gallery has represented his sculptural furniture, including the acclaimed Slump series — works exploring reflection, mass, materiality, and light.
