Bronze Sculpture & Lighting Design
"I work with bronze as a jeweler works with precious metals"
— creating pieces that capture light and movement.
Hervé Van der Straeten trained at the Beaux-Arts de Paris, where he developed the architectural rigour that underpins all his work. For over 30 years, he has shaped a universe where 'rigueur architecturale et audace sculpturale se rencontrent' — architectural rigour and sculptural audacity meet.
His work has been closely tied to Parisian gallerist Alexandre Biaggi, with whom he has collaborated for over 20 years. 'Working with Hervé is simple,' Biaggi told Design Anthology UK. 'There are never any problems, just solutions. But the true secret behind our collaboration is our friendship, trust and admiration for the other's work.'
Christie's has described his furnishings as pieces that 'transcend all trends,' noting that Van der Straeten is 'a master of creating striking pieces that complement collectors' art and objects without overpowering them.' His work draws on influences from Japanese visual art to Art Deco, yet remains remarkably sculptural and versatile.
