Bethan Gray

Contemporary rugs, textiles

About

Bethan Gray is a British designer of Welsh and Persian heritage whose work spans furniture, lighting, textiles and surface design. Trained at Bath Spa University and shaped by an early career at Habitat, she founded her eponymous studio in 2008 and has since built one of the most recognisable independent practices in contemporary British design, distinguished by a sensitivity to natural materials, craft heritage and the storytelling potential of pattern.

Her ongoing collaboration with [CC-Tapis](https://www.maisonaffluency.com/designers/cc-tapis), the Milan-based atelier renowned for its Himalayan-knotted rugs hand-made in Nepal, has produced some of the most lyrical pieces in the brand's catalogue. The collections — including *Inky Dhow*, *Shoal* and *Exploration* — translate Bethan's fascination with maritime journeys, marbled inks and the natural world into pure New Zealand wool and Chinese silk, each rug knotted entirely by hand using Tibetan techniques refined over generations.

Where CC-Tapis brings the rigour of artisanal production and a deep commitment to fair-trade manufacturing, Bethan brings a painterly approach to colour and a narrative drawn from her travels across the Arabian Peninsula, the Indian Ocean and the British coast. The result is a body of work that sits comfortably between collectible design and contemporary craft — sculptural floor pieces that anchor an interior while functioning as standalone works of art.

Her pieces have been exhibited at Salone del Mobile, Design Miami and the Victoria and Albert Museum, and are held in private collections internationally. Bethan was named Designer of the Year at the Elle Decoration British Design Awards and is a regular fixture in *Wallpaper**, *AD* and *House & Garden*.
